Why Huarmey Needs Your Help!

Huarmey is a city with a lot to offer but in turn it needs your help as well. It is the capital of the province and is about 300 km north of Lima. The next major city is Casma about 83 km away. Unlike Lima, Huarmey is a rather undeveloped town along the coast of Peru and unlike other cities like Cusco, very few social organizations have recognized the great opportunity to help improve the lives of the people of Huarmey.

Fishing and farming are two of the major industries in Huarmey. While the gold industry has contaminated parts of the Huarmey River pushing fisherman further and further upstream, there are still great hot spots along the river for fishermen to earn a living and typical plates like ceviche are top knot here. Social topics like water contamination and purification seem to get very little attention around here and some suspect cases of bribery or political corruption is involved.

Farming, especially asparagus, is a very successful industry in Huarmey due to fertile soil and excellent growing conditions. But many of the farming tools and equipment are antiquated and tasks are done by hand which can be back-breaking work. Along with fishing and farming, the local market provides many jobs and often serves as a secondary job for some including teachers.

In this poor pueblo, life isn’t easy and many people are lacking basic items that we take for granted. With most jobs in industries like fishing and farming, Huarmey’s working class works long hours which has a negative impact on local families. Most people commute to their job whether on the river or to the field or market, and it’s not unusual to be at work by 6:00 in the morning and to come home late at night. Often the oldest child goes along with his or her parents to earn more money for the family and the younger children are left home alone until late in the evening.

With a myriad of obstacles in their path, the children of Huarmey often suffer the brunt of it all. With parents gone most of the day, the instance of lock-key children and child neglect is extremely high and many children learn to fend for themselves in whatever way possible. In addition, physical and sexual abuse are very common in Huarmey but rarely addressed. Families often lack access to safe drinking water and poor sanitation leads to many health issues. Extreme poverty means many families cannot afford shoes for children, let along notebooks and pencils for school. The lack of opportunities commonly leads teenagers to drug-use and teen pregnancies.

But that isn´t the end of the story and you can be a part of the solution. The people of Huarmey are hard-working, humble and resilient and they need your help!

Buenas Dias!
We would like to tell everyone a little bit more about our program.  Currently, the program is completely free. The minimum stay is 15 days. Also, we have some rules which all volunteers must abide by.

 POSITION EXPECTATIONS AND RULES

1.  The volunteer will not use or be under the influence of any drugs or alcohol while working.
2.  If the volunteer breaks any items (for example: lights, decorations, etc) these items will be deducted from the volunteer's pay.
3.  Volunteer will work flexible hours each day depending on needs of the school.  Volunteer will not bring expensive electronic gadgets to school as this may cause problems with children and distract from learning environment.
4.  Volunteer will not attempt to start side businesses (i.e. handing out business cards stating that volunteer teaches private english lessons) while volunteer is a member of the project.
5.  Stealing or any other violation of this contract or the local law will be grounds for immediate termination from the project and termination of all benefits.
6.  Volunteer will immediately notify school principal of any other volunteers or other workers who break these rules.
7.  If Volunteer has any issues/concerns with the work, volunteer must discuss this with principal when the work is first assigned.
8.  This project does not provide insurance to volunteers.
9.  Volunteer receives breakfast (bread, coffee, and butter) each morning as member of project.  Lunch and Dinner are not provided by project.

We hope everyone will understand the need for these rules.  We strive for the most enjoyable and professional experience for both the children and the volunteers.  Also, we have a big kitchen for you to use at the hostel to cook your meals with if you wish.  There is also a local supermarket which is very cheap.  Also, we have two nurses at the hostel who can provide medical care should any volunteers need it.  Anyone interested in the program please contact us and we will prepare the program to receive you.  Thank you for your consideration for our project and we hope to see you here soon.

Jaime's Crazy Hostel Volunteering Program

Welcome to Jaime Crazy Volunteering !

We are so glad you found your way to us!  The city of Huarmey is located only 4 hours north of Peru's capital, Lima.  This desert flower is home to some of the world's most beautiful, surf-friendly beaches.  Huarmey, known as the "City of Cordiality", boasts opportunities for adventure with its amazing archaeological sites, breathtaking sand dunes, and mysterious mountains.  Volunteering with us will give you the chance to change many lives, but also an awesome opportunity to explore, experience, and enjoy the rich culture of Huarmey, Peru.

The citizens in this town have had many problems with nature damages, and because of that we want to help them. We think education is the only solution to get the citizens and the city to develop, and that is why we want you to help us!

Our volunteering program is divided into three different areas, so being a volunteer with us can fit every kind of volunteers!

1. Our first option is for those who have a basic level of Spanish and English, because you have to help the teacher in the local school. The volunteer will have to work 6 hours in the local school as the teacher's assistant. Because of that you need to have some language skills, so you can communicate with the teacher easily. Notice that you will not be the teacher of the class but an assistant to help the teacher.  It could for example be helping with organizing the class, delivering materials, or helping children in the classroom who you can see are struggling a lot to pay attention to the teacher.

2. Our second option is for those who don't have enough Spanish skills and don’t match option number 1, but still want contact with children. This volunteer would also go to school for 6 hours, but because of languages limits, you would help the school employers to take care of the school and play with children in their breaks. An example of your day could be paying attention to the children in their breaks, playing with them, improving your Spanish skills by talking with the children and helping the school employers with cleaning or other reparations.

3. Our third option is for those who are not interested in being with children, but would like to try how it is to be working in a hostel. For this option no Spanish skills are needed, but you will have to take care of the reception in the hostel, repair damages, or clean in the hostel for 4 hours each day. Working in a hostel is a good option for you who want to meet people from other countries, discover other cultures and develop your network!
